Why not me? (no really...why not?)

One of the fatal career traps I see people falling into again and again (and yes, that includes yours truly) is the notion that something amazing they want to do is something only other people can make happen. They have a litany of reasons why they can't do something like that.

On the flip side of the coin, the world is filled with people who are doing amazing things that never dreamed that it would happen for someone like them.

Next time you catch yourself eyeing your dream job and then discounting the possibility, stop yourself and ask, "Why not me?" No doubt you will come up with a dozen convincing reasons why not. For each of those reasons, stop again and ask yourself, "Is that really true, or is it an assumption I'm making? Is that fact or is that a story I've created?" Look at each of those reasons why you can't and challenge yourself to come up with five ways around the obstacle.

Get creative. Dream. Stretch. And then, just as importantly...act! Often our dreams are only out of reach because we sit there looking at them with our arms inert by our sides. Reach out toward the dream - it just might be closer than you think.

And by closer I don't mean instant, just add water dream fulfillment. Anything really worth doing is probably going to take a lot of work. By closer, I mean do-able. It may take work. It may take time. But it can be done.
