I can recommend a really helpful book that brings this message home...

The power of full engagement : managing energy, not time, is the key to high performance and personal renewal / Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz. New York : Free Press, 2003.

I read this book during a "down" time and the key message is that your ability to be fully engaged starts with physical and mental self-care. The first half of the book alternates case studies and explanations to illustrate their point. The second half of the book provides lists and resources to use to craft your own plan for renewal and engagement.

Curt Rosengren

Ha! Great minds think alike. I just ordered that book over the weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing what it has to say. Thanks for the tip. :-)

Max Leibman

This is such classic wisdom that is gets overlooked by each new wave of entrepreneurs and employees alike.

I think Stephen Covey put it best in the 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE (and in many of its sequels)--the seventh Habit is "Sharpen the Saw" (taking time to take care of yourself). He often speaks of the P/PC (production/production capacity balance). If you don't take care of your resources--including your body, mind, heart and spirit--you wont' be able to continue to produce at a high level.
