In January, I wrote a post with a link to an article about using Tarot cards as a creative thinking tool. The author of that article, Mark McElroy, also has a book called Putting the Tarot to Work. After seeing my post, he kindly sent me a copy of his book.
The day it came in the mail, I went out and bought a Tarot deck so I could play with the ideas he talks about. I'm really enjoying the book. Mark outlines a bucketload of ideas on using the Tarot as a tool for "creative problem solving, effective decision making, and personal career planning."
I've actually been incorporating a very simple approach with the Tarot cards into my work with some of my clients. I have them draw a card, and then read what the book that came with the card deck has to say about that card. Probably 75% of the time it has sparked some really interesting discussion around something they needed to explore, but which hadn't come up in our discussion. Seems to provide a great random spark for insight.
Any time you can incorporate something into your approach to your career that allows you to get a broader, deeper, more creative perspective, I'm all for it. This book has some great ideas for that. All in all, I'd say it's worth a read.

Thanks for the recommendation, but be careful with those tarot cards.

That's a fine idea. I haven't use the tarot with clients, but once in a while, when I'm stuck, it seems very useful to lay out a spread of tarot cards, and see what the instructions say it means. I'm no expert, so I have to read the instructions. But generally it provides some kind of new angle that is useful.
