I'm finally getting around to reading Roadtrip Nation, which has been in my stack of to-read books for a couple months.
It's by a couple college age guys who traveled around the country interviewing people who had "successfully defined their own path's in life," including, "the chairman of Starbucks, a lobsterman from Maine, the director of Saturday Night Live, the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic, the first female Supreme Court Justice of the United States, the head stylist for Madonna, and the CEO of National Geographic Ventures."
The book is a compilation of profiles from 30 of those interviews. I've just cracked it open, but here's a quote from the beginning that I loved, talking about the change of perspective they experienced after the first summer of interviewing people.
"The roadtrip taught us that we didn't have to build a life around money, around what our parents wanted us to do, or around what society deemed acceptable. The key out there was to block out the noise and listen to ourselves. We were now sure that we were not going to be doctors or consultants. Those were not our roads, so why would we travel down them?"
Hmmmmm...sound like some wisdom the rest of us could keep in mind?
