This is the function of Philosophy, to provide a meta-perspective on what you are doing. For example even when things were going bad at the start-up my team worked for, I provided a perspective to each team member to make the best out of the situation without getting discouraged.
From start to finish each team member had a vision of the where the work they were doing was leading to and how it fit in with their specific, individual talents. All this was hammered out in weekly open meetings of the team, who also got the 'inside' story from me, though kept hidden from higher levels of management.
Now I make it a point to have offsite, 'philosophical' discussions about the work we do on a weekly basis(an idea which I got from Andy Grove's excellent book 'High Output Management')
