10 tips to build belief in yourself

When it comes to pursuing our passions, our biggest enemy is our own fear. And often that fear comes down to one niggling thought in the back of our heads..."I can't." I can't overcome whatever problems come up. I can't figure out how to do it. I can't this. I can't that.
And at the heart of "I can't" is a faltering belief in ourselves. A belief that we really do have what it takes can make all the difference in the world. A belief that we don't can spell doom.
One person I interviewed a few years back who had succeeded in doing amazing things with his career made the observation that part of what had led him to his success was the fact that he had taken some risks early on that paid off. He had a positive reinforcement. His brother, on the other hand, had some failures early on, and spent the rest of his career in a fairly timid state, afraid to pursue his dreams.
So what if you haven't had that strong early risk/success reinforcement and you find yourself doubting that you really have what it takes - whether that comes as a subtle doubt in the back of your head or a full-on conviction that you would be crazy to even try? (And for the record, most of us fall somewhere in there.)
This article offers ten tips to build belief in yourself. Here's the condensed version.
1. Stop comparing yourself to other people.
2. Don't keep putting yourself down!
3. Using affirmations.
4. Accept all compliments graciously.
5. Take advantage of and use life coaching programmes, workshops, books on how to raise your self esteem and develop a more positive attitude.
6. Mix with positive and supportive people.
7. Acknowledge your positive qualities and skills.
8. Stop putting up with stuff!
9. Make positive contributions to others.
10. Involve yourself in work and activities that you love.
