Here in the US, today is Halloween, a day when little kids dress up in costumes, go door to door, and end up with a bag full of candy. And of course, the weekend was full of Halloween parties with adults dressed up in costumes of their own, pretending to be someone or something else.
Unfortunately, for many of them the masquerade doesn't end when the costumes come off. They may have taken off the Halloween costume, but in their careers they're still wearing a mask. Work is about getting up and heading out for another day spent being who they're not. The character they've created in their career is based on who they think they should be, not who they really are.
If that describes you, what better time than Halloween to commit to taking off that mask?! Today is a great day to commit to a career that energizes and engages you because it is such an integral piece of who you really are.
It all gets back to my definition of passion, which I've mentioned numerous times before. Passion is "the energy that comes from bringing more of YOU into what you do." It's being who you are, and doing work that is an extension of your core, not a mask you put on every day.
So Happy Halloween. Enjoy the masquerade. Then take off your costume and say, "I'm not willing to wear the mask any more. It's time to commit to change."
