There's a great discussion going on over on the Worthwhile magazine blog about doing what we're really good at. In an unpolished moment responding to a question from two Worthwhile investors about what she is best at, Anita Sharpe blurted out, "Seeing patterns," only to immediately feel foolish about saying that. She writes:
Yet, in fact, it's what I consider to be what I do best. And the things that enhance that perhaps-dubious talent -- talking to people, reading, observing and putting it all through a mental blender -- are what have always come naturally to me. It's also what I like. How many of us downplay or are even embarrassed by what we do best? How many of us fail to consider that what we do naturally is what we should do with our lives?
Of course, when you're looking at putting your skills and abilities to work, remember there are a couple different pieces to the puzzle. One is embracing what you're good at - because that is the gift you've been given and the ride is going to be a lot easier, and a lot more fun, on that track. The other is remembering that, just because you're good at something doesn't mean you have to do it. Always ask that good ol' standby - "Does it bring me joy?"
