Want to earn a cool $25 million? Richard Branson has an idea for you:
British billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson, with former Vice President Al Gore at his side, offered a $25 million prize Friday for anyone who can come up with a way to blunt global climate change by removing at least 1 billion tons of carbon dioxide a year from Earth's atmosphere.
...Branson, saying the "survival of our species" is imperiled by current environmental trends, said the prize was similar to cash inducements that led to some of history's most notable achievements in navigation, exploration and industry.
The winner must devise a plan to remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere without creating adverse effects. The first $5 million would be paid up front; the remainder would be paid only after the program had worked successfully for 10 years.

My Contest Entry:
I propose a gradually escallating tax for electricity generated by burning fossil fuels. That tax money will be used to fund environmentally friendly electricity production, including large as well as small solar PV installations.
Richard, please send my prize money as soon as possible.

My contest entry is to develope a number of large satellites that orbit just above the atmosphere. These satellites will have huge flexible tubes, extending into the upper atmosphere whilst a flexible upper tube will extend into space.
The satellites will have functioning motors that suck the CO2 out into space. Solar panels, together with onboard computers could keep the satellites in orbit, as well as keeping them stable, for 30/40 years at a time.

I have developed a new electricity producing pump that will eliminate the need for traditional coal, dam and nuclear power. Where do I submit applications to the global warming contest contest?

I have come up with an idea which will prevent the chopping down or removal of hundred of thousands of trees and the use of millions of gallons of water God knows how many tons of fuel used at sea and on land in transportation of the said trees. Also saving on enormous amounts in the use of electricity and gas therefore cutting down on the CO2 emissions caused by all this wasted energy and the recycling of a product that is generally used for one day then thrown away. This idea will stop the build up of the harmful gases and by not felling trees (as we know they respire and use CO2) it could actually reduce them. This idea is NOT dependent on global government but on global private enterprise that is most certainly profit bearing and therefore would be embraced by foreward thinking visionary business people. NEWSPAPERS & MAGAZINES. Please contact me for more info.

I think that the government should place solar panels on all government buildings. All hospitals which use large volumes of hot water, schools, colleges, council offices etc etc. If they used solar panels in large quantities the price would drop and become more affordable for the avereage householder who is effectively priced out of buying them at the moment. Also street lighting could be improved by using energy saving bulbs.
Posted by: Anita Rollinson | February 25, 2007 at 08:59 AM
I suggest that new building regulations be introduced making builders put solar panels on all new buildings therefore decreasing the need for fuel and using grey water from the bath shower etc to flush the toilets. Also large windows on the south side of the building and smaller windows on the north side.

my idea is to use a system like those used on a submarine to filter the air it would have to be at least 1 to 2 hunderd foot towers with a fan on top to draw the air down thru a filtation system and then release the filtred air back into the atmosfere

I suggest that we eliminate cars, roads & all small buildings to eliminate greenhouse gases, & start building only massive 100-story live/work/play tower cities connected to maglev trains worldwide. There will be all things in every tower: microfactories, houses with backyard balconies, indoor playgrounds, stadium/s, atriums, high balcony rails & mesh to prevent falls, waterfalls, gardens, hydroponic gardens, automate all the work, make all things last forever as much as possible to eliminate ethe work. Teach all people of all nations to work part-time, starting at 20 hours a week. Eliminate 98% lumber, paper, all carpets, fireplaces, insurance, loans, renting, & more. Make most furniture built-in permanent (dressers, cabinets, etc). Find ways to eliminate all or most of the work. Eliminating cars & small buildings will save lives & save the earth, as will a "guaranteed income" RFID for every person on earth, which will end the wage & end world poverty. Yes I'm serious. Thank you for listening.

My idea currently is in brainstorm mode....
My ideas are....
Organic structure
sponge
villi
absorbtion
increase in surface area
lungs
recylable
energy
human green house emissions
water vapour
aircraft
trees
plantings
replant the amazon forest today
Invest in alternate energy devices
Research biodiesel
trap the carbon in some sort of biomass (sponge).
aricraft can be the sponge or carry sponge like material
capturing NOx from aircraft, diversion......
To blunt global climate change by removing at least 1 billion tons of carbon dioxide a year from Earth's atmosphere.
I am seriously interested in your proposal, I would like to work further on our idea.
I have alot of faith in you Mr Branson, I realy like your book 'screw it, lets do it' hopefully my brainstorming ideas may be the start of something great!
I look forward to a reply and maybe a chance meeting with you sometime, to discuss further these ideas!

The production of power has led us to be very complacent with Power generating companies auto-mobile manufacturers and oth major polluters for our own greedy use. These companies knew many years ago that thier technologies were destroying the enviroment, and yet they did nothing.
It will take an ingenious idea that will solve this problem, however as Mr. Branson has said we created it now we must solve it.
God luck to everyone who is striving to meet this goal.

My husband has already designed and is currently working to assemble a prototype of an invention that will produce electricity requiring no natural resources and will emit 0% pollutants into the atmosphere during the process. However he is having a hard time acquiring all the parts he needs to have manufactured without his idea being stolen.
I am writing to you to ask for your help in acquiring the proper steps and procedures in having an invention produced, patented and marketed without it being stolen. This invention is sure to benefit the entire planet!

Im a woman and I strongly believe that having women going to work has been a direct cause to global warming.
Let me explain. Most families need 2 cars. All the driving to get the kids to daycare, then to work, back to get the kids at daycare and then home.
We as women are the biggest consumers: clothes, shoes, purses, hair products, make up, skincare, body products, lunches, health products, and more etc. We wouldnt need all of those if we didnt work.
We wouldnt need 2 cars if we didnt work. We wouldnt need daycare.
Its not an easy solution as we all need as a society to review our way of doing everything.
Take away all the women in their working positions, fill them with men only, the volume of salaries will drop and prices to consumers should follow. Thus, families could survive on one salary only.
It wont cost a thing and it will solve the problem in the long run.
Its probably the greatest idea yet, but many women will want to stone me for saying so LOL.
Also its probably such a simple solution that nobody will pay attention to it.
Society as a whole thrives on making everything SO complicated when it could be So simple.

Mr Branson and Mr Gore,
The simplest solutions are usually the best. I think I have it, but the scale required would be VERY costly. It would, most likely, have to funded from
ALL the governments & private industry, world-wide. Considering the alternative if nothing is done, it would behoove everyone if they did so.
I propose that a series of multifunction, manned platforms (total number to be determined by experts) be placed in geosyncronous orbit around the planet.
The platforms will have solar panels to their supply power needs.
Each platform will have, at least two (4) or more "carbon filament" cables (recently developed & perfected) which are long enough to lower smaller
platforms to various levels within the atmosphere. Each platform, in turn will have, at least two (2), carbon cables which can reach the surface to be used
in conjunction with "Space Elevators" to transport supplies up and down the cables as needed. In addition, power can be run DOWN the cables from the
Geosyncronous Space Platforms for the different functions that will be required.
At some point in the upper atmosphere, smaller platforms will be tethered to the cables which would house the equipment needed to filter the chemicals and
gases out of the atmosphere (much like Co2 scrubbers in the International Space Station and the Worlds' spacecraft). These would have to be of giant
proportions, of course, but it could be done. The extracted gases and chemicals could then be sent up to the geosyncronous space platforms to be processed
there or to be transported to a Central Platform/Processing Space Station NOT in geosyncronous orbit which could handle the processing from ALL the
geosyncronous platforms. The Non-geosyncronous platform/processing plant's orbit could be such that it passed over each platform on a regular basis. This
means, however, that smaller versions of the Space Shuttles would have to be designed & built to ferry the containers back & forth from the platforms to the
processing center.
After all the processing has been completed, extracted "Ozone" should be returned to the platforms, at the very least to help repair/replentish the
planet's "Ozone Layer". The containers could be lowered & the gas released at the appropriate altitude.
The other chemicals & gases could be utilized as well I am sure. Simply return the containers to the various platforms to be returned to the planet. For
chemicals & gases NOT wanted, use "mass drivers" to shoot them into the sun where they will not be a threat to anyone and do NO damage to ANYTHING. These
platforms could also be used to bring radioactive & other hazardous waste outside the atmosphere where they could also be shot into the Sun, as well. Thus
getting rid of other ecologigal problems caused by them.
Another suggestion is for the automobile/truck manufacturers, around the world, to give up this bit about "hybrid petrolium/electric" vehicles. Why build them? They STILL use up petrolium and the milages haven't improved very much at all! Hybrid IS the right idea, but instead of petrolium, "hydrogen" should be used! It is EASY to produce, renewable, "NON-POLLUTING", and there ARE vericles out there running on nothing BUT hydrogen or natural gas already! Our technology has come so far as to be able to manufacture small processing plants that can be used by an average consumer to make hydrogen "at home". As well as running automobiles/trucks with hydrogen, people could heat their homes with it! Thus saving petrolium to make plastics (used everywhere, especially in the medical industry) and synthetics. If we keep consuming the petrolium at the current rate, ALL facets of EVERYONE's lives will change dramatically in the near future.
I ask all the governments, industries, and big businesses of the world ONE question: "What good is it to be filthy rich if you or your children are just going to die because of the efforts in accumulating that wealth? What good will money be when there is NO food, power or medical... No one to fix your house, vehicle... Simply NO ONE at all?"
I know I am no expert, but to me, these suggestions seem to be the most viable solutions for a NUMBER of problems. I DO hope you give this serious consideration as I want to think that mankind will continue to thrive on the planet WITHOUT destroying it!

DEAR MR.BRANSON, I POSTED TO YOU EARLIER,FIRST OF ALL I WOULD LIKE TO SAY ONE VERY IMPORTANT FACT IN OUR WORLD ENCYCLOPEDIAS DATED BACK FROM YEARS AGO IT STATES WE ARE SITTING AT 78% NITROGEN AND 22% OXYGEN! CORRECT? ALOT OF THESE TEXTS HAVE NOT BEEN UPDATED TO 2007.SO NOW I KNOW THAT WE ARE SITTING AT A LESS FACTOR. IS OUR AIR TURNING TO LIQUID NITROGEN,DO WE HAVE A HIGH CONCENTRATION OF THIS IN THE AIR TODAY IN EXTREME TEMPERATURES.I HAVE SOME POSSIBLE SUGGESTIONS TO ELIMINATING GREENHOUSE GASES,OR WORKING WITH WHAT OUR AIR QUALITY PROBLEM IS TODAY.PLEASE CONTACT ME AT MY EMAIL ADDRESS WHICH I LEFT WITH YOU ON A PRIOR CONTACT.1 OF MY POINTS IS CAN WE VACCUMM THE AIR? AND OF COARSE ANOTHER OF MY IDEAS IS TO DO WITH H20........
Posted by: sherry white | March 28, 2007 at 07:14 AM
I've been working theoretically with an idea for some time it's bacsically to make our own version of nature inside vehicles
it starts at photosynthesis to produce sugar( using sugar in an engine was proven to still work on mythbuster's)then use methane to turn that to ethanol eventually the alcohol no matter which one will be dehydrated producing hydrocarbon ( I know bad idea) but if we could get close to complete combustion or similar to it then we could use carbonate ions and carbon dioxide/ monoxide to break them down to sugar and repeat the processes. in fact i've thought about other chemicals in the enviroment and possible ways of breaking them down to collect the co2 i'd suggest air intake followed by liquifying parts out to leave co2 which can then be used in the process. so basically it's as follows( pre-written down):
6CO2 + 6H2O -->6C6H12O6 + 6 O2
C6H12O6 + 6 CH4 --> 6 C2H5OH
Dehydration to ethene
C2H4 + CH4 --> propane
X Propane + Y O2--> propanol / propanediol or propylene glycol
Propanol dehydrates to propene
And propanediol dehydrates to propyne
C3H4 + CH4 --> C4H8 + CH4 --> C5H12
Which is the showing of C3H4 + 2 CH4 --> C5H12
C3H6 + CH4 --> C4H10
And when big hydrocarbons form like octane or higher combust them as fully as possible and add CO2 and you might react it back to sugar. There were highlight's in different colors for different paths but it didn't paste those.
this idea has been sent to nasa and discoverychannel but has had no response as of the time of writing this

DEAR SIR, I WOULD LIKE TO LEAVE ONE MORE COMMENT TOWARDS MY IDEAS ON ELIMINATING GREENHOUSE GASES FROM OUR ATMOSPHERE.I REALLY DON"T THINK GETTING RID OF ALOT OF OUR MATERIALISTIC THINGS IS AN ANSWER,OR GETTING RID OF TREES,OR ALOT OF OTHER THINGS MENTIONED THROUGHOUT THE CONTEST I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT THE ANSWERS ARE QUITE SIMPLE OR SIMPLIFIED.AT THE END OF MY LAST COMMENT I MENTIONED H20,ONE VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION THAT I HAVE FOR YOU IS,AND THIS MAY BE A VERY GOOD SOLUTION TO OUR PROBLEMS....IF ALL PLANT LIFE IS WATERED WITH FILTERED WATER HOW DOES THIS EFFECT THE GROWTH AND CHEMISTRY OF ALL PROCESSES? AND HOW DOES FILTERED WATER COMPARE TO ALL OTHER SOURCES OF WATER WITH OXYGEN CONTENT?MINERALS ETC.I BELIEVE THAT FILTERED WATER IS AN ANSWER!A VERY GOOD START.I BELIEVE THAT WE NEED TO INCREASE OUR OXYGEN CONTENT IN THE AIR BUT HOW?
WE MAY EVEN NEED TO GROW ALL PLANT LIFE NOW AT A HIGHER,ALTITUDE SO ALL GASES ETC.DO NOT GO INTO OUR ATMOSPHERE.........

Everybody is designing this and that but the biggest problem is us the population of the world.6 Billion people is using energy and there is the problem. Now, just think, somebody develops something for now but the population is still growing after a couple of years the population will be 10 billion, then what, another idea? The answer is cruel: stop the growing of the population.

DEAR MR.BRANSON, I HAVEN`T RECIEVED ANY REPLIES BACK TO ANY OF MY SUGGESTIONS OR COMMENTS LEFT.I WOULD STILL LIKE TO CONTINUE ON WITH A FEW MORE OF MY OWN IDEAS IN REGARDS TO WHAT WERE LOOKING FOR IN BEING ABLE TO GET RID OF GREEN HOUSE GASES.I HAVE BEEN THINKING A LITTLE MORE ON THE SUBJECT,WE DEFINATELY NEED TO FIGURE SOMETHING OUT SOON THERE REALLY ARE ALOT OF GASES AND OUR OXYGEN LEVELS IS VERY DEPLEATED WE NEED SOMETHING POWERFULL ENOUGH TO DECINEGRATE THE HARMFULL THINGS,GASES MAYBE.CAN OXYGEN BE USED?MORE SO IN A DIFFERENT WAY TODAY INSTEAD OF IN SMALL QUANTITIES?CAN THE ATMOSPHERE BE RAISED?SO WE HAVE BETTER AIR TO BREATH.CAN SOME TYPE OF INSECT OR DEVICE BE MADE TO BE IN THE AIR TO DECINEGRATE THE GASES,IT DOESN`T HAVE TO BE SOMETHING HUGE JUST MAYBE SOMETHING THAT FLOATS OR HANGS MAYBE POWERED BY BATTERIES TO MOVE FREELY THROUGH THE AIR.MAYBE SOMETHING SIMILAR TO A FLASH LIGHT.FOR SIZE AND SHAPE.MAYBE SOMETHING LIKE A VACCUMM.I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT THIS WOULD BE A GOOD STRONG START TO SOME OF THE ANSWER,AND ONE OTHER COMMENT I`D LIKE TO MAKE BEFORE LEAVING TODAY IS THAT I BELIEVE THIS NEEDS TO BE DONE AT A SPECIFIC OF THE SEASONS FOR THE BEST AIR QUALITY AND BEST OXYGEN RESULTS.

While everybody is looking for a solution, could there be an invention so that a filter would be at the end of a muffler, like for a vacuum cleaner, to prevent those gas to go into the air. That would be a beginning so that those who walk would not be bother. Thank you for trying to help the earth. Carole

Simple ecomonics. I work at FERC and it seems to me that the electrical use would be greatly reversed if people just chose to build "nestegg houses" by formworks. They have a great insulation factor and the truth is that you do not need solar panels, fancy air sponges, or any other crap like that. It is just a drain on money. If you have no heating cost and no cooling cost, you need only power convenience items (TV, Internet tools, cooking apparatus etc). Does anyone even know how much electricity is used via heating and cooling? It is enormous, I have the numbers from industry. One huge step to reduce made simple. If the government would incentivise (sp?) new green buildings with a 75% tax break for five years, you'd have more people building that way. The problem all revolves around "a want to" for common people who are too lazy or too stuck in tradition to build anything other than an inefficient box to live in.

I firmly believe hydrogen will or has been utilised in cars, therefore that’s not the issue. It’s my understanding that all electricity is generated through steam. So the problem lies with heating the water without burning fossil fuels. To do this could we not utilise the suns energy using glass? I don’t know how unrealistic it is and location, development and maintenance cost would all be large issues. But could this not be a possibility in certain areas of the world? Thanks

I have developed a magnectic proplution ground veichle which is road and all terran viable- with a no-change out modification.It is low cost to produce, there is zero emmisions, roll over exempt, and impact resistant. It is got enough style to give it bling for little bucks.This car could be small enough for two or large enough to trasport what a eighteen wheeler can handle. More reserch is needed to see if modifacations could be adapted for air and water navigation systems.

This is not a big problem in itself, the problem is how to get governments to do it. A simple tax on all fuel bills, the money paid to people in Africa who are ready to plant trees, would do the trick.

I am not a scientist so I do not know if this will affect removal of greenhouse gases but I think it could help the overall global warming issue. One of the concerns is the melting of the polar ice caps and glaciers around the world. As these bright, white surfaces are diminished the heat build up is accelerated because the now exposed land and water absorb the heat of the sun rather than reflecting it back into space. This creates a "snowball" effect (no pun intended).
The majority of roofs are made of black or dark materials which of course also absorb the heat of the sun. Black top parking lots and roads also absorb the heat. What if we began to use light colored reflective materials in our roofs. This would reflect heat back into space. If just the businesses with flat roofs, most of which are covered with black tar, did this it may have a profound effect. These roofs could with relative ease be spray painted with white or aluminum paint. If heat is reflected back from the buildings this would reduce the need for air condtioning in the summer. Usually during the winter months the sun's rays are not as strong so this would have minimal effect on the heating issue.
If we also used reflective paint on car roofs this could dramatically reduce the heat absorbtion of the blacktop roads and the parking lots. Most parking lots are full of cars during the day when the sun is strongest. All those white roofs would not only be reflecting the heat back but also preventing the blacktop from becoming so hot.
Now the really neat thing is that this is affordable and something everyone could take part in. When roofs are replaced they would be replaced with light reflective colors. As cars are produceed the reflective roofs would be standard. Who looks at the roofs anyway?? The gov't can help with tax incentives for individuals and businesses who make efforts to participate.
Simple!!!

For those who've posted comments here:
HAS RICHARD BRANSON RESPONDED?
He hasn't, and he never will. He doesn't even send contest entry forms when requested. He loves to be in front of the camera, but sadly he seems to be all talk and no action.

Thanks Kris for your November 7, 2007 comments about no responses. I will not bother to present a device that has been developed during the last 8 years. I'll go directley commercial with it.
Thanks again.

Why is it that Mr. Branson wants to remove the CO2 from the atmosphere when the smart thing to do is to prevent it from getting there in the first place. I have made a change to a common product that most people see every day without ever realizing the amount of CO2 that it produces. In a quick calculation of CO2 emitted by a diesel engine, my changes amount to 5 million tons per year of CO2 that won't get into the atmosphere. I know that is only 5% of the target but can I get 5% of 25 million? The 6 million would enable me to complete the product and retire on the difference. Now, lets see if they will show their support and walk the walk instead of just giving lip service. I think not.

Some quick organic chemistry to solve our problem: Take lysergic alcohol, turn it to the bromide, react it with magnesium, then react that product with all of the CO2 in the atmosphere. You will essentially convert all of that CO2 into LSD. Double win for the hippies. Richard, call me.

Can we run our car with water and gas?
Can anybody tell me is the HHO Gas is real working or is another scam?

hi there, I use water to fuel a car as a supplement to gasoline. In fact, very little water is needed, only one quart of water provides over 1800 gallons of HHO gas which can literally last for months and significantly increase your car fuel efficiently, improve emissions quality, and save money. I found the way through this site http://www.runcarsonwater.us i really recommend it to everybody, it's a nice eBook where you can find the instructions on how to do it! take a look.

I have developed a system that allows the average handyman to produce green hydrogen at home using recycled automobile parts. The hydrogen is used on demand to produce electricity through a devise that can also be made at home quit simply and affordably. This system uses only sun, wind and water(prefferably salt water), for hydrogen production. The benefits are endless. Clean fuel made at home, safe, only emits water and heat as a byproduct, can reverse the rise of our sea level, eleminates moving parts-no need for oil, reduces landfill waste, low cost of production, materials can be found locally reducing shipping needs, reliability, minimal maintenece, and most of all no harmfull pollutants released into our atmosphere. Just a little insight- this is how most living things on our planet get their energy. Energy can't be made and it can't be lost. Energy just moves from one form to another so the only thing you need to do is harness it. I just discovered Richard Branson today. I saw a special on the morning news about his achievements and his goals. Even though I have only known of him for hours, he is definitally at the top of my list. I have been studying fuel and energy all my life and I believe I deserve this award. If I win I will use a good portion of the winnings to help educate the general public about the worlds enviromental problems.
